Tell us who you are, who you run with? And how long have you been running for?
Hi, I’m Mat! I’m a bit of a solo operator these days, though I’ve had some great coaching influences along the way. My running really grew out of the triathlon scene, where I was coached by the crew at Trivelo. Over time, I found myself leaning more and more into running. Keeping it simple. I’ve been competing in the running space for over eight years now.
Why do you run?
Honestly, I feel a deep sense of gratitude that I can run. Not everyone gets that. Running gives me space. Space to think and process everything that life brings. Some days I enjoy pushing myself and seeing what I've got in my tank. Other days, it’s the opposite, no splits, no pressure, just enjoying movement.
What motivated you to take on your chosen race this year?
The Great Ocean Road Half Marathon isn’t your average half. The rolling hills seriously keep you accountable the whole way. And then there’s the setting. That coastline. It’s iconic for a reason and I can't wait to be out there.
Do you have a goal?
These days, I’m more interested in how I finish. I want to run it well. Controlled. Empty the tank, of course, but not burn all my matches in the first half of the race.
What’s your favourite SHYU?
Race day kit is locked: ciel | yellow | black. Clean. It pairs perfectly with my Puma race shoes.
Racing as part of Team SHYU, what does this mean to you?
SHYU is seriously doing something different. The brand is so focused on improving the running and race day experience for every type of runner. Team SHYU is tight. Everyone genuinely loves the sport and it's incredible to be part of something that’s community-first.
